Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson shared a hedge on J.J. McCarthy, pointing out he's just a rookie.
One of the top headlines entering the NFL season is the status of J.J. McCarthy and whether or not the young quarterback will be capable of helping lead the loaded Minnesota Vikings to a deep postseason run.
The 22-year-old missed his rookie campaign due to numerous setbacks following a torn meniscus, but even before the injury, McCarthy's limited pass attempts throughout his tenure at Michigan raised concerns about his transition to the pros.
Coach Kevin O'Connell spent special allotted time with McCarthy last year during his rehab to make that shift less daunting and try to catch him up mentally.
The Vikings have the roster to contend for a championship, but that likely hinges on McCarthy's ability under center. One player came out in defense of their quarterback, trying to temper lofty expectations.
While speaking to the media at training camp, superstar wideout Justin Jefferson harped on being tolerant of McCarthy's inevitable growing pains.
"You've got to have patience because he's pretty much a rookie," Jefferson said. "He's still new to the scheme and throwing to these different receivers. You don't expect him to have the same mindset as a veteran. We do have an expectation of him being great and working his butt off, and we do see that. You can see the confidence he has out there."
Jefferson was never going to throw his young teammate under the bus, but you could tell by this monologue the respect he has for McCarthy and the belief he has in him as a leader and a passer.
Minnesota has the fifth-toughest schedule in the league, so it will be apparent quickly whether McCarthy pops off the screen or will need time to shake some of that rust off.
