It's a big day for the Giants.
The Giants on Wednesday are getting the first crack at an in-person interview with John Harbaugh, their top target in their latest head coaching search.
Harbaugh is at the Giants’ training facility in East Rutherford, meeting with team brass, according to multiple reports.
The Giants are considered one of the three favorites to land Harbaugh, who was fired earlier this month after leading the Ravens from 2008-25.
The other favorites are the Falcons and Titans — who, like the Giants, have at least somewhat settled quarterback situations.
Harbaugh clearly is prioritizing quarterback stability. After sitting down with the Giants — who surely will offer him the job Wednesday — he is expected to meet with the Falcons and Titans by the end of this week.
But the Giants are the only coach-needy team in this hiring cycle so far that has complied with the Rooney Rule. So they are the only team that can make a hire right now. Which means Harbaugh might be their new coach by the end of Wednesday, boxing out the Falcons and Titans.
The Giants, who went 7-27 over the past two seasons, are trying to build around Jaxson Dart, coming out of the quarterback’s encouraging rookie year in 2025.
They hope Harbaugh can deliver their fifth Super Bowl ring — and his second. He won his lone title to date in 2012.
Harbaugh made the playoffs 12 times in 18 seasons with the Ravens, but he inarguably underachieved with transcendent star quarterback Lamar Jackson. And the relationship between Harbaugh and Jackson crumbled leading up to Harbaugh’s firing, as the coach reportedly lost the Ravens’ locker room.
In seven seasons with Jackson as his full-time starter, Harbaugh reached zero Super Bowls and one AFC title game.
How would he fare with the Giants’ inferior roster, constructed by general manager Joe Schoen, who was retained for 2026 despite massively underwhelming from 2023-25?
Schoen is entering the fifth and final season of his contract with the Giants. Presuming they keep him after potentially hiring Harbaugh, Schoen could be in line for a contract extension.
