The St. Louis Cardinals (52–50) sit fourth in the NL Central, trailing the first place Chicago Cubs by 8.5 games and 3.5 games out of a playoff spot. After a hot stretch to open the season, they’ve cooled off, dropping seven of their last ten games.
In Tuesday’s matchup against the Colorado Rockies, the season hit a new low: Erik Fedde lasted just three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk in his tenth loss of the year to the worst team in the National League.
Determined to win now and mount a postseason push, the Cardinals designated Fedde for assignment Wednesday morning. While the front office shuffles the roster, the spotlight turns to the players—none more so than star shortstop Masyn Winn.
After Tuesday’s loss, Winn announced an injury update, “My knee is jacked up right now. My knee is not okay.”
Even so, Winn insisted he won’t be sidelined any longer. “I don’t really like missing games. I already missed a lot this year, I’d like to play every single one moving forward. I got an injection before the break but I don’t really think it did anything. But I can’t afford to sit out.”

Winn is playing in his third big-league season with the Cardinals after the organization selected him in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft.
Over 90 games this year, the 23-year-old shortstop has played excellent defense while batting .269 with a .713 OPS, seven home runs and 34 RBIs.
