Fresh Report Emerges As Celtic Strike Deal With Hajduk Split For This Versatile Canadian: Why O’Neill Must Make The Call

If a report from the Croatian outlet 24Sata is believed to be true, Celtic have already struck a £3m deal with Hajduk Split for Niko Sigur. The young Canadian was recommended and sanctioned by Wilfried Nancy before being relieved of his duties following their 3-1 Old Firm derby defeat against Rangers, and according to The Daily Record, the board have now put the transfer on hold in the aftermath of Martin O’Neill’s return as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Born in Canada, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder spent his youth years with Mountain United FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and Vaughan Azzurri. He played for the York Lions during his university career, but moved to Slovenia to join the academy ranks of Radomlje. Sigur left for Hajduk Split within six months and eventually earned a first-team status since 2023.

Primarily a ‘number 6’, the youngser also featured as a right fullback both for his club and the country. He switched his allegiance to Canada after making a few appearances for the Croatia U21 and has featured 15 times for Les Rouges so far. An international teammate of the Celtic fans’ favourite, Alistair Johnston, Sigur has played more than 100 games for Hajduk Split, but could ply his trade in Glasgow if the deal is finalised in due course [stats via Transfermarket].

Why Celtic Should Secure His Services To Complement McGregor

Celtic are in complete shambles, with Rangers level on points amid the Hoops’ catastrophic run under Nancy. O’Neill must turn things around to keep their title hopes alive, but the veteran Northern Irishman insists on the necessity of new signings, particularly after a disastrous summer window.

Julian Araujo has been brought in on loan from Bournemouth for the remainder of the season. The right-back should get the nod over Anthony Ralston and Colby Donovan until Johnston returns from his injury. However, the depth down the right now dismisses the necessity of deploying Sigur in the defensive third.

Yet the Celts should snap him up to challenge and cover skipper Callum McGregor as a deep-lying playmaker. They have ample options in the middle of the park, with Arne Engels, Reo Hatate and Paulo Bernardo being rotated week in and week out. But the trio have failed to deliver while dictating the game from the midfield base. They are more suited as box-to-box options, and the Canadian, therefore, could be a value-for-money signing, capable of succeeding the club skipper in the long run.
