Hansi Flick explains why Lamine Yamal started on the bench for Barcelona vs Athletic Club

The teenager was left out of the starting XI after missing training ahead of the game.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has explained why he left Lamine Yamal on the bench for Wednesday’s Spanish Super Cup win over Athletic.

Yamal missed training again ahead of the match and Flick explained that the teenager has been feeling ill and that his absence was nothing to do with his recent pubalgia issues.

“He had some discomfort the last few days. He couldn’t train these past few days, which is why he was on the bench. It has nothing to do with the injury; it was a stomach problem,” he said.

Yamal did come on in the second half as Barcelona cruised to victory and so looks likely to be available for Sunday’s final against either Real Madrid or Atletico.

Flick was happy with his team’s performance against Athletic, praising two-goal Raphinha in particular.

“We did everything right, I’m very satisfied. We kept a clean sheet again. That gives us confidence defensively,” he added.

“I’m very happy for Raphinha. He gives his all on the field and is a great example for everyone.”
