Oliver Glasner confirms willingness to sanction Marc Guehi transfer to Manchester City

Marc Guehi will join Manchester City this month under two significant conditions, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has admitted.

The comments represent the clearest public indication yet that Palace are prepared to sanction the departure of their captain during the ongoing January transfer window, should circumstances align.

Manchester City’s interest in the England international has gathered momentum in recent days following defensive injuries sustained by Josko Gvardiol and Rúben Dias, prompting renewed internal discussions at the Etihad Stadium over immediate reinforcement.

Pep Guardiola initially attempted to downplay the prospect of January investment, but subsequent injury updates and Palace’s evolving stance have shifted the public landscape. As outlined in previous reports, City have long admired Guehi, with monitoring dating back to scouting work overseen by former sporting director Txiki Begiristain.

From Palace’s perspective, the defender’s contract situation continues to loom large as Guehi approaches the final months of his deal, and Selhurst Park officials weigh the sporting value of retaining their captain against the financial impact of losing him on a free in the summer.

Speaking to the media this week in his latest round of media duties, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has admitted that Marc Guehi will make the move to Manchester City if a “massive offer”is made, and if the England international himself “wants to do it”.

“Everybody wants that he [Marc Guehi] plays for Crystal Palace, signs a new contract and stays here for ever,” Glasner insisted.

He continued, “On the other side, there’s the situation that the contract ends in the summer and if somebody is coming, there will be a moment when the club says: ‘Now the financial issue is more important than the sport issue.’ We have to do it and try to get the best.

“That’s why I’m always saying: ‘I don’t know.’ Because this is different. There will be a threshold where the club has to say [sell] … If the player says: ‘I want to leave’ and the money is above the threshold, it will happen.”

Concluding, Glasner confirmed, “I’m not so naive not to know that if a massive offer comes from [Manchester] City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”

The remarks align closely with previous reports suggesting Palace would only consider a January sale if Manchester City were willing to move beyond their current valuation, which is believed to be in excess of the £35 million agreed with Liverpool last summer.

With Max Alleyne already recalled by Manchester City from a loan at Watford and further academy involvement possible, Manchester City are weighing whether to escalate talks or maintain their stance and revisit the situation later in the window.

Should Marc Guehi formally indicate a desire to leave and Manchester City decide the price meets their aims, a January deal could still move quickly. Until then, negotiations remain delicately poised. But for the first time, Palace have openly confirmed a transfer is on the table.
