Michigan football loses QB Mike Keene, RB Bryson Kuzdzal to portal

Mikey Keene became the third Michigan football QB to enter the portal the past two weeks while Bryson Kuzdzal is the second running back to depart.

Another Michigan football quarterback, as well as a key contributor at running back, have entered the transfer portal.

QB Mikey Keene and RB Bryson Kuzdzal have both entered the NCAA transfer database for the 2026 season, a program spokesman confirmed. Keene, a graduate student, transferred to Ann Arbor before the 2025 season after spending four seasons as a starter at Central Florida (2021-22) and Fresno State (2023-24). He played in 39 games and completed 67.8% of his passes (793-for-1170) for 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

Michigan quarterback Mikey Keene (7) warms up ahead of the Washington game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound QB never played in a game for the Wolverines, however. He suffered an upper body injury before the season, which led to him not participating in practice during spring ball. Though he was said to be getting healthy by the end of summer and into fall camp, Keene still appeared on the availability report for the first month of the season.

Keene, who has one year of eligibility remaining, is the third quarterback from Michigan's 2025 roster to enter the portal, following former four-star recruit Jadyn Davis and 2024 starter Davis Warren.

Kuzdzal, meanwhile, is a bit of a surprise. He met with reporters following U-M's season-ending 41-27 loss to Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and indicated he intended to return to Ann Arbor:

"I’m planning on being here until I’m not," he said. "That’s where I want to be."

Kuzdzal, a former walk-on from Grand Rapids (Forest Hills Eastern), appeared in nine games during the 2025 season, getting more time as the season went on and starters Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall suffered injuries. He ran 76 times for 326 yards and four touchdowns to go with four catches for 10 yards.

Michigan Wolverines running back Bryson Kuzdzal (24) rushes with the ball against the Texas Longhorns during the first half at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025.

He got the start against Maryland and ran 20 times for 100 yards and three touchdowns – all career highs – and also started against the Longhorns when he ran 20 times for 82 yards. Kuzdzal has three years of eligibility remaining.
