The FC Bayern recently chimed in on his tactical mindset.
Vincent Kompany has gone from one of the most controversial manager signings in recent years to one of the greatest success stories. In response to manager sackings and hirings of the past that didn’t pan out, Bayern Munich opted for a young and promising manager who seemed out of his depth at a club such at Bayern Munich.
Fast forward to 2026, and Die Roten look like serious Champions League contenders amongst an invincible domestic campaign thus far. A major difference from how the team looked previously under Thomas Tuchel. Kompany had lots to say when asked what principles are non-negotiable for him in terms of build-up play.
“If there’s space, you go for goal – it’s as simple as that. Basically, everything we do with the ball has to put us in a better position to score, regardless of whether it takes five, 15 or 30 passes. What we want to avoid are situations where we get caught outnumbered. Then we have to switch play, remain patient and wait for the right moment. If we’re pressed high, we look for a way out and attack. If the opposition is sitting deep, we find solutions in tight spaces – with passes, runs and movement. For me, that’s the whole point of possession,” Kompany said as captured via @iMiaSanMia.
Kompany seems to recognize the culture in Munich. The expectations are not just for Bayern to win, but do so in style with a clear emphasis on scoring goals. Kompany’s side is doing that better than any team in Europe at the moment and the end product is an elite team and entertaining product for the fans each week.
2026 could be a serious year for the trophy cabinet if Bayern can polish out a few rough marks in the coming months. While Bayern showed some weakness in November and December, is there a better team in Europe at the moment?
