Former Real Madrid forward Ronaldo Nazario has opened up about one of the lesser-known internal stories from his time at Real Madrid, shedding light on how a tense relationship between the coach and the hierarchy ultimately led to a managerial dismissal.

The Brazilian legend recently appeared on Charla Podcast, where he reflected on several phases of his decorated career, including his spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.

While many topics were covered, one particular anecdote stood out – the circumstances surrounding the departure of former Real Madrid manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo in 2005.

What’s the story?

Ronaldo began by offering a balanced assessment of the coach, making it clear that the issue was not about tactical ability.

Speaking about Luxemburgo’s qualities, he said, “Vanderlei was very good. He was a very good coach. His staff was very good.”

He added, “He was above average, but he had a problem with team management. He always did.”

The former striker then introduced the key figure who would eventually influence the coach’s fate – club president Florentino Perez.

Ronaldo explained that the turning point came from a recurring decision that did not sit well with the club’s leadership.

Recalling the decisive moment, Ronaldo said with a laugh, “Luxemburgo left because he took me off in every game.”

He then revealed what followed behind closed doors. “The president went to talk to him and said, ‘You know that all these people who come here come to see Ronaldo, and you take him off the field.’”

According to Ronaldo, Luxemburgo stood his ground during the conversation, refusing to compromise his authority as head coach.

“And Vanderlei said to him: ‘President, with all due respect, I am the coach and I decide’.”

The outcome was swift and decisive, as Ronaldo concluded bluntly, “Okay, stop by human resources.”
