Women’s Basketball: Olivia Miles nets triple-double, leads No. 8 TCU past BYU

Miles recorded her fourth triple-double in five games on New Year’s Eve.

No. 8 TCU extended its winning streak to 14 games with a victory on the road over the BYU Cougars on New Year’s Eve by a score of 72-48. TCU continues to dominate on the defensive end of the floor, holding their 13th opponent this season to under 60 points. This was only BYU’s second loss of the season as TCU passed a solid test on the road with flying colors. The Frogs are now 14-0 on the year, 2-0 in Big 12 play and have won every single game this season by double digit points.

Olivia Miles recorded her fourth triple-double in the last five games with 12 points, 12 rebounds, ten assists, one steal and two blocks. While this was not the most efficient scoring night from Miles, she found ways to impact the game in a myriad of other ways, facilitating the offense, collecting rebounds, and playing excellent on ball and help defense. On a team with so much talent, Miles’s ability to impact games without the ball in her hands is very important.

Clara Silva led the Frogs in scoring against the Cougars with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Silva’s offensive game continues to develop as she has recorded at least 14 points and three assists in back-to-back games. Marta Suarez was the third Horned Frog starter in double digits with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The game against BYU saw the bench have collectively its best game of the year for the Frogs as both Veronica Sheffey and Taylor Bigby finished in double figures. Sheffey knocked down two threes on her way to ten points, one rebound, and one steal while providing some important ball handling to give Miles a rest. Bigby provided some great minutes for the Frogs as well with 12 points, two rebounds and two steals.

The Big 12 conference schedule for the Frogs is loaded with quality opponents and quality contributions from the bench will be important for TCU to keep the starters fresh and to defend their conference title.

TCU’s field goal defense was once again superb, holding BYU to just 30% shooting from the field as a team. The Frogs did a good job closing out on three point shooters as the Cougars managed to make just 22% of their shots from beyond the arc. It was another complete performance defensively by TCU as BYU turned the ball over 17 times and were unable to score 50 points in the game.

It was a team effort on the offensive end with five Frogs finishing in double figures. TCU did a great job getting to the free throw line and converting on their free throw attempts making 16 of 19 attempts from the stripe as a team. One area to improve on for the Frogs moving forward would be to limit offensive rebounds, BYU collected 14 as a team compared to just seven offensive boards by the Frogs.

The Frogs will stay in Utah for their next game as they are set to take on Utah in Salt Lake City on Jan. 3 at 8 p.m. The Utes are 10-4 so far this season and 1-1 in Big 12 play, taking down Arizona on the road and dropping a thriller to Arizona State at home.
