JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (WATE) – Carson-Newman defensive coordinator Tyler Almond has been promoted to lead the Eagles.

Almond, the 2025 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year, is the program’s 21st head coach. He has spent the last two years as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, helping to create one of the strongest defenses in Division II football in both seasons.

In 2024, Almond’s defense finished in the top 20 nationally in both total and scoring defense. The new head coach also playing a part in the Eagles earning a division title and playoff appearance that year.

This past season, the defense lead by Almond finished No. 17 among all division II programs in total defense, and No. 5 in the nation in scoring defense.

Prior to arriving at Carson-Newman for the 2024 season, Almond was a defensive analyst at East Carolina and Georgia Tech. Before that, he spent time as the defensive coordinator at Dixie State, six seasons as an assistant at Sacramento State, his alma mater, and as a defensive backs coach at Sierra College.
