There’s a pack of hungry dogs in Boulder and they were barking like crazy last night. Not because of the fireworks, but because of their deep hatred for the Arizona Wildcats.
JR Payne’s Buffs sunk in their teeth early. CU took a 17-5 after the first quarter, tearing apart the Cats on both sides of the floor. The Buffs shot over their zone defense, attacked them in transition, and then sliced them up with some cagey high-low passing between Jade Masogayo and Tabitha Betson.
While Arizona played better in the second quarter the Buffs continued to impose their will. Freshman Logyn Greer and Providence transfer Anaëlle Dutat each made some shots and dominated on the glass. They would combine for 24 points and 18 total rebounds as the Buffs won that battle 41-30.
The Buffs’ halftime lead could have been bigger than 32-18, just as the second half could have been a complete blowout. But the Buffs went cold for a bit, Micky Perdue got hot, and that lead was down to 39-31. That’s as close as it got.
Colorado’s shots started falling, they turned turnovers into transition points, assited nearly every basket — 20 assists on 26 made shots — and the forward continued to play well down the stretch. CU would win 75-56 for their first W in the Big 12 schedule.
CU is back on track after losing 79-63 to Arizona State before Christmas. Now 10-3 and 1-1 in conference play, the Buffs need to go on a run to build their NCAA Tournament resume. They host Cincinnati on January 3, then go on the road to face Baylor and Oklahoma State on the 8th and 11th, respectively.
