FARGO, N.D. (USD) — A shorthanded South Dakota basketball team fell 84-61 to North Dakota State Wednesday in the team’s Summit League opener at the Scheels Center.
Isaac Bruns eclipsed 1,000 career points in the first half of the contest and finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Uzziah Buntyn added 15 points, three assists and two steals, while Cameron Fens had 10 points and seven boards.
The Coyotes held the lead for a majority of the first half, behind 10 points from Buntyn and six from Jordan Crawford. The final few minutes of the first half belonged to the Bison who closed the half on a 10-0 run over the final two and a half minutes to take a 38-30 lead at the break. The Bison took advantage in the paint with 14 points and 10 offensive rebounds that turned into 13 second chance points.
NDSU expanded its lead in the first five minutes of the second half behind a 16-2 run that saw the Bison take a 54-32 advantage. North Dakota State would hold a lead greater than 20 points for the remainder of the game on the way to its 84-61 win. The Bison shot 67.9% in the second half, while holding USD to 37.0% shooting from the field. Bruns had 13 points to lead all scorers in the second half on 4-of-8 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers.
The Bison had five players reach double-digit scoring and shot 55.0% from the field as a team.
South Dakota is back in action next Wednesday when they travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to face St. Thomas at 8 p.m.
