Orange will not be the dominant color for the Tennessee Vols or Illinois Fighting Illini in the Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium.
There will be a noticeable absence of the color orange when Tennessee football plays Illinois on Dec. 30 in the 2025 Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl.
Orange is a featured color for both teams, but No. 23 Tennessee (8-4) will be in its all-white uniforms with only orange trim and jersey numbers, while Illinois (8-4) has opted for all navy uniforms to distinguish itself from the Vols in the game at Nissan Stadium (ESPN, 4:30 p.m. CT).
The Fighting Illini will even wear navy helmets featuring the "Illinois" script logo as part of its alternate look.
"From our perspective, we're really fortunate to have two colors that we really enjoy, orange and blue," Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said.
"In the Big Ten, we're unique in that we're the only school that has orange, and so we've leaned heavily into the orange over the years. As we came down here we wanted to make sure it was clear as you're walking down the street and walking into the stadium who's with us and who's against us. Sometimes, on first glance, it's not always apparent which orange somebody might be sporting, and we wanted to make sure it was clear from our perspective."
Illinois has worn navy-on-navy uniforms recently, but it has been a while since the Fighting Illini, making its first appearance in the Music City Bowl, has worn navy helmets. It will be the first time Illinois has worn navy helmets under coach Bret Bielema.
"There was a time several years ago when a lot of schools were wearing lots of different helmets, us included," Whitman said. "We had a white helmet and a blue helmet and an orange helmet. But we've gotten back to just wearing the traditional orange helmet, which has been our historic color."
Illinois' players liked the switch-up with headgear, Whitman said.

"We wanted to bring a little extra juice for our guys," Whitman said. "So we surprised them and got the helmets done in blue, and I just talked to coach (Bielema), and I know they were pretty fired up when they saw them for the first time."
This will be Tennessee's fourth appearance in the Music City Bowl. The Vols also wore all-white in their last appearance in 2021 when they lost to Purdue 48-45 in overtime.
The Vols wore their smokey grey helmets and jerseys with black pants in 2016 when they beat Nebraska 38-24, and orange jerseys with white pants and helmets when they lost to North Carolina 30-27 in double overtime in 2010.
Illinois and coach Bret Bielema facing Tennessee for first time
This will also be the first time Tennessee and Illinois have ever played, and the first time Fighting Illini coach Bret Bielema has faced the Vols. That's surprising considering Bielema was the coach at Arkansas, which is in the SEC, from 2013-17.
"I really wanted this matchup," Bielema said. "I have a tremendous respect for Tennessee. Being in the (SEC) four or five years I never had the opportunity to play Tennessee. Scheduling in the SEC can be very unusual. I didn't see Kentucky or Vanderbilt either in my entire time in the SEC. But I saw Florida twice, Georgia twice, and a couple of others. It was always intriguing to me. So when I heard (Tennessee) getting floated around for this game, I got really, really excited about it."
It will be Illinois' third bowl game in four years. The Fighting Illini played South Carolina in the 2024 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and Mississippi State in the 2022 ReliaQuest Bowl.
