In a heartwarming moment on Monday evening, the Los Angeles Chargers shared a video announcing that franchise legend Philip Rivers is retiring with the team that drafted him, marking a homecoming fans have been clamoring for since Rivers played his final game for the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. Today, Chargers fans, and Rivers, got the ending each deserved.

This video is a heartfelt tribute to Rivers’ career, narrated by him personally. He fought back tears as he shared what his time in San Diego and Los Angeles meant to him.

Rivers mentioned some of his favorite moments, such as an overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2008 playoffs, which saw him take down the recent Super Bowl Champions for the second playoff run in a row.

He also recalled his game at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, where he and Mike Williams connected for a go-ahead touchdown and a two-point conversion with just seconds left on the clock to win.

Rivers is a man of the people through and through. When asked what he misses the most about his playing days, Rivers talked about his teammates and the fans.

“But what I miss and am most appreciative and thankful for are those relationships. The things that were behind the scenes, the things you lived every day.” Rivers said.

In addition to his top-notch ability as a teammate, Rivers will retire as one of the best quarterbacks in league history.

Rivers hangs it up with the sixth-most passing yards in NFL history, the sixth-most passing touchdowns, and the eighth-most completions.

What he meant to the people of San Diego, and the Chargers franchise as a whole, is something few players can say for their respective cities and teams in league history.

Philip Rivers’ mark on the league won’t be forgotten any time soon.
