FIFA has received more than 150 million ticket applications for next year's World Cup at the halfway mark of the latest sales stage.

Football's ruling body said on Monday that the applications have come from more than 200 countries and territories.

FIFA said the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada is oversubscribed 30 times and that the applications were 3.4 times more than the total attendance at all previous World Cups since the maiden edition in 1930.

“This overwhelming response from passionate fans is a true representation of how our game is loved globally," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

The latest sales stage started on December 11 and runs until January 13, after which the tickets will be decided by lot. It is the first with most group matches known following the December 5 draw.

There are more tickets available than at past editions because the World Cup has been expanded from 32 to 48 teams and from 64 to 104 matches.

The sales process has not been without controversy as fan groups have hit out at high ticket prices. FIFA then introduced a number of $60 ticket for fans who apply for tickets from the contingent for participating teams.
