SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Thunderbirds gave everyone a chance Sunday night to enjoy the game of hockey.

The T-birds hosted its sixth annual sensory-friendly game, welcoming fans of all ages and abilities as they took on the Bridgeport Islanders. It was a more inclusive game-day experience for fans who may be sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, or sudden changes in the arena atmosphere.

Modifications included a low-volume goal horn, noise meters, a decreased microphone and music volume, and no strobing lights. Two “Cool Down Stations” were also set up offering calm, quiet spaces to relax and recharge. The game is in partnership with the Center for Human Development and students from the Springfield College’s Department of Occupational Therapy, who are helping to create a more inclusive experience in an environment everyone can enjoy.

Mackenzie Feeley, a Springfield College student told 22News, “We don’t have a lot of in-classroom experience with actual kids. So being able to apply the skills we’ve learned in the classroom is really helpful in practicing and developing them further.”

The Thunderbirds did take home a win Sunday night by defeating the Bridgeport Islanders with a final score of 4 to 3.
