TGL Season 2 Opener: Atlanta Drive GC takes down New York Golf Club 6-4 in Finals rematch

Season 2 of TGL kicked off on Sunday with an epic Atlanta win

The second season of TGL officially kicked off on Sunday and did so with the defending champions in Atlanta Drive GC taking on New York Golf Club in a rematch of the first season’s Finals.

Notably, Chris Gotterup and Corey Conners subbed in for the Atlanta side to join Billy Horschel for the match as TGL announced a few hours prior to it starting that Patrick Cantlay and Lucas Glover were unable to participate due to injuries. Justin Thomas, also a member of the Atlanta team, previously announced that he would be out of golf for some time as he recovers from surgery, but he did join Matt Barrie on the ESPN broadcast for a bit to celebrate the season starting.

Here is how all of the action unfolded. A reminder that the first 9 holes are triples while the final 6 are single matches that alternate through the teams.

TRIPLES

  • Hole 1 (The Plank): Tie
  • Hole 2 (Stone & Steeple): Tie
  • Hole 3 (Fallen Pine): Tie
  • Hole 4 (Big Apple): New York wins hole to go up 1-0
  • Hole 5 (Set in Stone): Tie
  • Hole 6 (Stinger): Tie
  • Hole 7 (Cliffhanger): Tie
  • Hole 8 (Flex): Atlanta wins the hole to square things up at 1-1
  • Hole 9 (Fore-0-Fore): Atlanta wins the hole and two points following a successful Hammer throw to go up 3-1

SINGLES

  • Hole 10 (The Spear), Chris Gotterup and Cameron Young: Gotterup successfully defeats Young to give Atlanta a 4-1 lead
  • Hole 11 (Loot On The Line), Corey Conners and Matt Fitzpatrick: Conners drove into the penalty area, New York threw the Hammer, Atlanta declined and the hole was conceded to narrow things to 4-2 in favor of Atlanta
  • Hole 12 (Cenote), Billy Horschel and Xander Schauffele: Tie
  • Hole 13 (Bluebonnet), Chris Gotterup and Cameron Young: Young got the better of Gotterup this time around and narrowed the margin to 4-3 in favor of Atlanta
  • Hole 14 (On The Rocks), Corey Conners and Matt Fitzpatrick: Fitzpatrick came up with a huge putt to win the hole and even things up at 4-4 entering the final hole
  • Hole 15 (Quick Draw), Billy Hosrchel and Xander Schauffele: Atlanta threw the Hammer to start the hole and Billy Horschel drained a putt to take the two points and victory on the match as a hole, 6-4

You have to see Billy Ho’s putt to win it. The 37-footer was officially the second-longest putt made in TGL history.

It was a thrilling finish to a really fun opening match. TGL has found a perfect spot in golf and sports culture at large, and this match was a great way for the second season to get going as it was fun, entertaining, and highly competitive all at once.

Something that is fun this season that we got to see is that teams have their own holes now. The fourth hole (Big Apple) was the New York Golf Club’s Team Hole so it was nice to see them win it. Fore-0-Fore was Atlanta’s and they not only won it, but they won it with a Hammer thrown. Double the fun.

TGL is back. Atlanta looks just as good as ever. Billy Horschel is inevitable.

Let’s go.
