Vincent Kompany has backed Jonas Urbig for success for Bayern Munich, Germany

Kompany had a lot of praise for FC Bayern keeper Jonas Urbig, who’ll one day be the number one at the club…

Jonas Urbig hasn’t been getting a lot of matches for Bayern Munich so far this season, but he’s stood firm every time he’s been called upon by Vincent Kompany when Manuel Neuer has not been available. So far this season, the young keeper has made a total of five appearances across all competitions, all of which have been winning efforts for Bayern, the most recent of which coming in the 4-0 Bundesliga win at Heidenheim to end the first half of the season.

Last season, due to a longer term injury to Neuer and Sven Ulreich not being available for large portions of the season due to personal reasons, Urbig played a total of twelve times in the second half of the season after Bayern brought him in from FC Köln in the winter transfer window. With the move, Bayern very much has the plan of Urbig being able to eventually become the long-term replacement for Neuer once he’s no longer the bonafied starter for the German Rekordmeister.

Kompany recently stressed the confidence he has in Urbig and even went as far as tipping him to get a callup to the German national team by Julian Nagelsmann at some point. “Of course it wasn’t easy for Jonas (when he joined Bayern). He came from Cologne. He didn’t play there during that time either. But we were convinced. Michael Rechner, Christoph Freund, Max Eberl were all convinced that he would be a very strong goalkeeper in the future – for Germany too, not just for us. The boy has already learned a lot from Manuel Neuer, but has also worked an incredible amount in training. He is a real fighter. It is also his personality. He’s never satisfied in training when his team loses,” the Belgian manager explained (Bild).

Until Neuer either retires, leaves Bayern, or starts accepting a more reduced role at the club, Urbig is in a good spot. Until he is able to become the number one keeper for the club, whenever that time may come, he’ll be able to continue to work alongside Neuer day in and day out in training at Säbener Straße, continuing to grow and develop with one of the best to ever do it. “He is a great character who will continue to develop in the future. It is currently being calmly built up with one of the best goalkeepers of all time. The combination with Manu is perfect,” Kompany enthused, knowing that he has the luxury of his future number one keeper being able to learn from one of the best Bayern and Germany keepers of all time.
