Ravens WR Devontez Walker cannot evolve if he's not involved

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Devontez Walker didn't see much action in his rookie NFL season.

Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric Decosta drafted wide receiver Devontez Walker in the 2024 NFL draft with much optimism. Yet, Walker’s selection didn’t prompt offensive coordinator Todd Monken and company to sequence in Walker with the starters much at all in 2024.

Even when wide receiver Diontae Johnson performed his "I will not play" charade and wide receiver Zay Flowers was hampered by injury, Monken still found every reason to trust in reserves like Anthony Miller and Tylan Wallace (who played great) when merit seemed to point in Walker’s direction. Could Walker's sophomore season allow for more opportunities?

Now, veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins stands firmly in the way of Walker's playing time, and Walker will more than likely find himself increasingly alienated from reps with the starting lineup. To keep his spirits up, head coach John Harbaugh has deployed Walker on special teams and as a decoy when the Ravens are in victory formation. This, however, is only a shadow of Walker's potential.

Ultimately, Walker deserves a chance to operate as the No. 4 wide receiver on the depth chart. With just one target last season, Walker scored a touchdown on a passing play to fully ignite his teammates in week 15. Walker possesses the speed, size, and athleticism to cause a serious problem for the opposing No. 4 defensive backs on any NFL roster. So, Monken and the Ravens may want to consider giving Walker more chances instead of sure selling the No. 3 wide receiver spot to Hopkins in 2025.
