Andy Reid vouches for Matt Nagy to be head coach amid contract expiration

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s contract is set to expire at the end of season.

And while much criticism has been directed toward Nagy and the rest of the offensive staff this season, head coach Andy Reid displayed his full support for Nagy to be a head coach once again.

“We were on a record pace there for a bit, as far as statistically, he does a nice job,” Reid said. “I think he deserves to be a head coach in this league.”

Nagy followed Reid to the Chiefs after leaving Philadelphia in 2012. He was the offensive coordinator from 2016-2017 before being named the head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018-2021.

During his time in Chicago, Nagy went 34-31, with two playoff appearances in four seasons. After being fired from the Bears, he returned to Kansas City in 2022 as the quarterbacks coach, before being named OC again in 2023, following Eric Bienemy’s departure.

Nagy declined to comment on his current contract situation on Monday, instead putting his focus on the team and their Christmas matchup against the Denver Broncos.

“Out of respect, it’s a fair question, I honestly want to just focus right now,” Nagy said. “I really am focused with these guys and want to help these guys out and that stuff will take care of itself at the end.”

Since Nagy returned as the OC, the Chiefs offense has not regained the level of production from 2018-2022. But, they also went to back-to-back Super Bowls, winning the former.

Nagy also played a major role in the development of Patrick Mahomes, and despite the recent struggles, his credentials hold a lot of weight.

There has been rumors of Nagy being linked to the Tennessee Titans head coaching vacancy.

It will be intriguing to see if Nagy returns to Kansas City with the uncertainty surrounding his future.
