Bengals' Trey Hendrickson breaks silence on leaving Cincinnati for Florida during contract talks

Trey explains himself.

On the day Trey Hendrickson could've been reporting to Cincinnati Bengals training camp, he was in Jacksonville, Florida.

His negotiations with the Bengals on a contract extension have dragged on the entire offseason, and they don't yet appear close to finished.

Hendrickson spoke with The Athletic's Dianna Russini to explain why he headed south in the meantime.

"For the last 30 days, he had been at his home in Cincinnati and training," Russini writes. "But as training camp approached, he and his wife decided to leave. They received two offers in a 24-hour span, none containing the guarantees past the first year he was looking for. Hendrickson didn’t want to hear the practice whistles while being a distraction to his teammates, so he and his wife Alisa decided to pack up and head to Florida. Down in Jacksonville, Hendrickson continues to train, hoping that a deal can be worked out."

Hendrickson summed up his feelings to Russini in this quote: “I was more than willing to take less in some ways in order to make this work.”

On his current contract, Hendrickson would be paid $16 million to play the 2025 season. He's likely worth double that.

Hendrickson has 17.5 sacks in each of the past two seasons. He's the defensive leader for a team that really, really needs him.

But for now, the Bengals star is hanging out in Jacksonville.
