As the search for Michigan’s next head coach rages on, the buzz surrounding Biff Poggi is growing. He believes that he is the right man for the job.
The search is still on for the next head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, and the longer it goes, the more buzz there is around interim head coach Biff Poggi. Poggi, who was on the staff under Jim Harbaugh, returned to Ann Arbor this season to be the associate head coach under Sherrone Moore. He served as the team’s head coach while Moore was suspended for games against Central Michigan and Nebraska, and he will lead the Wolverines into battle against Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
Poggi does have head coaching experience, as he led the Charlotte 49ers for just under two seasons. He went 6-16 during his time with the program, but he would obviously have a lot more to work with if he were the coach of the Michigan football team.
Preparations for the Citrus Bowl are heating up, and Poggi met with the media on Monday to discuss the latest around the Michigan program. A postseason matchup with Texas would typically receive all of the attention, but the Citrus Bowl is of low importance right now. The coaching search is the big topic of discussion, and Poggi is a candidate.
Michigan has conducted multiple interviews with Poggi, and when he was asked why he should be the next head coach of the program, he didn’t mince words.
“Because I know what the hell I’m doing,” Poggi said. “I have a long ten year history of knowledge of this place. This place is really important to me and my wife. One of our boys played here, Henry, and we have two daughters most of you don’t know about who graduated from here or are graduating, and this place has been great to them. One is a doctor, one is going to be a doctor, and Henry, talk about the power of Michigan, he’s now an investment banker. This place is magical. The program means a lot to me, and it’s one of the things I want to fix before I go smoke myself to death with cigars. I want to fix this program.”
Unapologetically Biff. A lot of people have their doubts about Poggi, but it’s hard not to love the guy.
