Manchester United will feel hard done by after losing 2-1 to Aston Villa.

It was always going to be a difficult encounter for Man United, with more than a handful of key players missing due to the African Cup of Nations as well as injuries.

Still, Ruben Amorim’s men showed a lot of heart as they pushed Villa to the limit in search of a positive result.

According to club legend Roy Keane, United’s loss came as a result of one inconvenient reality.

United’s dominance against Villa

Reflecting on the statistics of the match, United were the better team on the day.

Not only does the attacking momentum graph show the consistent pressure they put on Villa’s defence, but the numbers show the same.

With 57% possession, United took 15 shots, compared to 12 from Villa. They also had a higher xG of 1.31 compared to 1.02 for the home side. (Stats via Sofascore)

In Keane’s eyes, this data made little difference to the match outcome, with one harsh situation making all the difference.

Keane’s blunt assessment

In the former United skipper’s eyes, the visitors were the better side. He was of the belief that Villa won without playing well.

“Villa didn’t have to play particularly well today, two moments of magic from Rogers – but as much as you could say Man Utd played well, you always felt Villa had something,” Keane explained.

“They have that confidence and belief to win a game without playing great. That’s a good sign and credit to Villa, they’re flying, they’re enjoying it, and now there’s a big week coming up,” he concluded.

It seems that there was nothing explicitly wrong with United’s display if Keane is to be believed. Rather, it seemed that luck was against them on the day.

As the season has worn on, United have improved in leaps and bounds. While they may have dropped points today, this is understandable given how short-staffed they were.

Hopefully, once they are back to full strength, United can transform their impressive performances into victories.
