Annika Sorenstam's son Will, 14, once again put on a show at PNC

ORLANDO, Fla. – Will McGee grew four inches over the past year yet, at age 14, still has the distinction of youngest in the field at the 2025 PNC Championship. A perennial fan-favorite, the enthusiastic lefty once again put on a show alongside mom, 10-time major winner Annika Sorenstam. He was particularly impressive on the greens.

“He sees the line, and he trusts it, and, you know, he's not a technical guy,” said Sorenstam. “He's just, okay, this is how I feel, this is what I do, and kind of … wills it in.”

For her part, 55-year-old Sorenstam said she’s become quite mechanical, trying to achieve the perfect stroke. The pair have switched it up this year, with Sorenstam now putting first to give her son a few lines, though she also admits he might be the better green-reader.

On the par-5 18th at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Will converted a closing birdie putt to give Team Annika an 11-under 61 — their lowest round yet in the scramble format. They trail Matt and Cameron Kuchar by four strokes. John Daly and his son “Little John” are two back after an eagle on the last.

“He's the horse and the saddle,” said Daly of his son. “That's all there is to it.”

McGee’s recent growth spurt has resulted in an extra 20 to 25 yards off the tee, which comes in handy this week as mother and son play from the same tees. (The same tees used by LPGA No. 2 Nelly Korda and her father Petr.)

McGee said that as his body changed, it took time to get the same feel with his wedges off certain lies, but he has since found his stride. It’s his irons that have improved the most of late as he’s gone from sweeping shots to compressing the ball more to get added height.

Off the tee, Sorenstam hits first this week so that McGee can try to squeeze out every inch he can. He’s outdriving her now too and, on occasion, even beats her from the same tees.

Sorenstam, ever the competitor, isn’t one to simply let him win either.

McGee is a bona fide celebrity at this event, a personality magnet who is prone to giving out hugs after the round. The Lake Highland Prep golfer has big goals in the game: He wants to win majors and be No. 1 in the world.

“I just want to be able to carry on her legacy,” said McGee, “and for people to remember me not only as her son, but a good golfer.”

With those words, McGee began to tear up. Mom did too. T

here's no other week like it in golf.
