Dak Prescott gets workload update at training camp from Brian Schottenheimer

It's a new year and new expectations for Dak.

Dak Prescott

It's been a decade of Dak Prescott in Dallas.

The Cowboys' quarterback is entering his 10th year in the league and has surely earned his badge as a veteran.

With that status comes more responsibility as a leader but it can also mean managing the tread on the tires of an experienced player.

That's exactly what head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys plan to do with Prescott.

"Now that he's in the over-30 club, we're going to be smart with some of the things we do with him," Schottenheimer said at training camp on Tuesday.

"He is anti-that. He wants to do as much as possible. Luckily we have the trump card with him on that," he added.

The early highlights from Prescott in training camp have been promising. He's continued his chemistry with CeeDee Lamb and already had some nice connections with new wideout George Pickens.

But the Cowboys have no reason to risk injury to their star QB after he suffered a hamstring injury that ended his season last year. They traded for young gunslinger Joe Milton as a backup and giving him more opportunities will also help his development.

"We got two other quarterbacks we're really excited to evaluate," Schottenheimer said. "Joe Milton is a guy that we're really excited about. We want to see him play a bunch."

However, don't mistake this announcement for a shift in playing time overall. Prescott will still anchor the first team and his body of work speaks for itself. The staff is making it clear that they will monitor his workload more than ever.

Prescott may not like it, but this is the best course of action to keep him fresh for the season and find out what Dallas has in its other quarterbacks.
