The St. Louis Cardinals, after falling to 3.5 games out of a wild card spot in the National League, are trending towards being sellers at the trade deadline.

While there's still time to turn things around, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak provided an update on the team's current status at the trade deadline.

Katie Woo of The Athletic shared the latest from Mozeliak following their weekend series coming out of the All-Star break, where they were swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"We're being much more open-minded to where we were pre-All-Star break," Mozeliak said. The Cardinals aren't shutting down trade talks like they might've at the beginning of the month, especially after their weekend series.

As Woo writes, "Inquiring calls picked up rapidly after Sunday's game, Mozeliak admitted." Mozeliak said, "I think people realized it was a tough weekend for us."

But, while the weekend series was tough, the Cardinals get a bit of fresh air, as they face off against the Colorado Rockies, the worst team in baseball this season. They won game one on Monday, 6-2.

Just that one win could change how the Cardinals view the trade deadline coming up at the end of the month. If St. Louis can contend, they may hold onto some of their top trade chips.

However, with the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers out of reach, the Cardinals might still sell off some of their players even if they're in a spot to compete for a wild card spot in the NL.

"You have to compete in your division," Mozeliak said. "There are three teams that are really hot right now ... And we're not."

Not only are the Cubs and Brewers running away from St. Louis, but the Cincinnati Reds have begun to get hot and challenge the Cardinals for third place in the NL Central.

Such a tough division, combined with the tough weekend series, could lead to the team selling at the deadline. While things can still change, at least, for now, Mozeliak is more open to a trade than he's been before this season.
