The Guardians have been exploring trade options for their All-Star closer
The Cleveland Guardians are trending towards being sellers at the trade deadline. At 49-50, and firmly outside of the AL playoff picture, the team could look to sell off some of their key pieces.
A shocking trade proposal from Ryan Shea of Sports Illustrated sends the Guardians’ All-Star closer, Emmanuel Clase, to the New York Yankees in exchange for a trio of prospects.
Shea’s full trade proposal is as follows:
Yankees receive: Emmanuel Clase
Guardians receive:
Yankees #7 prospect Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz
Yankees #15 Prospect Cade Smith
Yankees #26 Prospect Brando Mayea
Clase could serve as additional bullpen help for the Yankees, who have seen their bullpen be decimated by injuries, and inconsistent performance all season. This season, Clase has 21 saves with a 2.86 ERA, and 44 strikeouts. Also, Clase has three years of team control remaining on his contract.
Shea made the case as to why this trade makes sense for a struggling Guardians team at the deadline.
“ In this proposed deal, the Guardians would receive three top-30 prospects from the Yankees’ organization,” Shea wrote. “Rodriguez-Cruz, the most advanced of the trio, is currently pitching at the Double-A level. Smith is developing in Single-A, while Mayea remains in rookie ball.”
The Guardians only have a little over a week to decide which direction they will go at the trade deadline, barring anything unforseen, it appears likely that players such as Clase will be shopped around.
