Rutgers running back Antwan Raymond honored as the best Canadian in college football.
Rutgers running back Antwan Raymond has won the Jon Cornish Trophy and will be honored as the top player from Canada across college football.
Raymond, a sophomore at Rutgers and a native of Montreal, Quebec, finished the season with 244 carries for 1,241 yards, 13 rushing touchdowns, and two receiving touchdowns. He was named one of the 10 semifinalists for the Doak-Walker award, an annual award given to the best running back in the country that year. His rushing yards total for one season ranks eighth highest in school history and was the third highest in the Big Ten this season. Raymond’s best game of the season came against Maryland, as he ran the ball 41 times for 240 yards and one touchdown against the Terrapins. To add on to that, Raymond scored at least one touchdown in 10 different games last season.
He was named to the all-Big Ten second team by both the coaches and the media.
Raymond is the first player in program history to receive the award. The award itself started back in 2017 and has honored three running backs, including Raymond, since then. With this achievement, Raymond joins Chubba Hubbard and Chase Brown, running backs who currently play for the Carolina Panthers and the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Cornish Trophy was named after Jon Cornish, a former high school football player from British Columbia and a college standout running back at the University of Kansas. Cornish later went on to win three Most Outstanding Canadian awards and a 2013 Most Outstanding Player award in the CFL. He also helped the Calgary Stampeders to two Grey Cup titles. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
