The Boston Red Sox are in a position to be buyers at the trade deadline. They have turned their season around, and they have clear needs to address.
Despite Garrett Crochet's phenomenal season so far, the Red Sox starting rotation as a whole has been disappointing. Lucas Giolito has pitched well as of late, pitching to a 1.43 ERA in his last seven starts. However, the Red Sox need to add more reliable starting pitchers.
The trade market may not be full of great starters this year, but that does not mean there will not be any available. Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer predicted the Red Sox would trade for MacKenzie Gore of the Washington Nationals.
"As Gore is only 26 and controlled through 2027, the Nats might as well listen and see if anyone offers a boatload of talent that could help get their years-long rebuild back on the right track," wrote Rymer. "And if any team should indulge them, it's the Red Sox. Whereas their offense has kept humming along even after the trade of Rafael Devers in June, the starting rotation just keeps getting thinner underneath staff ace Garrett Crochet. Kutter Crawford and Hunter Dobbins are already done for the year, and the same may prove to be true of Tanner Houck after his latest setback."
Gore has become a great pitcher for the Nationals. He was named an All-Star this season. He has a 3.59 ERA this season and has made 20 starts. Last year, he had a 3.90 ERA in 32 starts. He has become a great return from the deal that sent Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres.

Crochet, Gore and Giolito could become a trio that helps push the Red Sox into October. The Red Sox rotation has actually struggled so much that finding an upgrade would not be that difficult. However, Gore has multiple years of club control and is projected to earn a 10-year, $157 deal on the open market. If the Nationals know they won't pay him, they would be wise to trade him while his value is high.
