NY Giants awarded OLB off waivers from New England Patriots

The Giants continue churning the roster to fill holes as the season winds down.

The 2-12 New York Giants took advantage of their status as the NFL team with the highest waiver priority this week to claim outside linebacker Caleb Murphy from the New England Patriots.

Murphy, 26, is a 6-foot-3, 254-pound former undrafted free agent who began his career in 2023 with the Tennessee Titans.

This season, Murphy played six games with the Los Angeles Chargers, got waived, then played in five games for the Patriots. He has a half-sack in 19 regular-season games, which he got this season for the Chargers. Murphy has 19 career tackles, eight of them solo.

Murphy played 79 special teams snaps for New England, but only three snaps on defense.

Outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux has missed the Giants’ last four games with a shoulder injury. Is this perhaps a sign that Thibodeaux could be headed to injured reserve for the final three games of the season?

With only three games remaining in a 2-12 season, more and more injured Giants are likely to finish the season on injured reserve.
