Patriots officially add linebacker Chad Muma off Colts’ practice squad

The Patriots carried an open spot on the 53-man roster.

The opening on the New England Patriots’ 53-man roster has officially been filled.

The organization announced the signing of linebacker Chad Muma off the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday, as previously reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Muma, 26, entered the league in the third round of the 2022 draft at No. 70 overall. The former first-team All-Mountain West honoree out of Wyoming spent his initial three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars before being claimed off waivers elsewhere in the AFC South in August.

Through 55 games, including seven starts, Muma has seen 722 snaps on defense and 911 snaps on special teams. His NFL career includes 99 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three passes defensed.

The 6-foot-3, 239-pound Muma made a handful of appearances for Indianapolis this campaign before going unclaimed in November and agreeing to remain on the Colts’ practice squad. Under league rules, he will now count on the active roster in Foxborough for at least the final three weeks of the regular season.

A spot on the 53 opened Monday with the waiving of core-four linebacker Caleb Murphy. Defensive captain Robert Spillane, who was active yet did not take the field last weekend at Gillette Stadium, is also working through a foot injury.

The Baltimore Ravens host head coach Mike Vrabel’s 11-3 side on Sunday. The flexed kickoff at M&T Bank Stadium is set for 8:20 p.m. ET.
