New York might lose one of its biggest players.
The New York Knicks have had an intriguing offseason and have mostly decided to keep their core together.
After falling in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau and landed on Mike Brown as his replacement. Despite that shakeup, the Knicks have mostly focused on continuity this offseason.
With the team’s top players all set to return next season, New York’s big roster moves have simply been some additions to its depth. By bringing in Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele, the team is in a solid position to make another deep run in 2026.
While everything seems set up for a great run next season, things can begin to look a bit murkier beyond that. While a Mikal Bridges extension seems like a formality and might simply be a matter of whether he takes a deal this offseason or next, Mitchell Robinson’s situation is much trickier.
Robinson, who entered the starting lineup for the Knicks in the postseason, has been a Knick his entire career and continues to be a massive difference-maker. His rebounding and interior presence defensively were massive in the Knicks’ conference finals run.
However, as noted by Forbes’ Tom Rende, there could be some challenges. While an extension makes perfect sense on the basketball side, the Knicks might have to go into the second apron to keep Robinson around if they reach a deal with Bridges.
Although it might be worth the gamble for a year or two of undeniable championship contention, the potential penalties just to keep a fringe starter could be enough to sway the Knicks in another direction. As Robinson enters the final year of his contract, he will look to help New York compete for a championship, but his status beyond next season is still up in the air.
