It's a big Brewers night! Jacob Misiorowski is back on the mound and George Webb burgers are at stake

Jacob Misiorowski. George Webb burgers. Two of Milwaukee's favorite things converge on the mound in Seattle on July 22.

There hasn't been much precedent for the Milwaukee-wide frenzy surrounding young pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, who has taken Major League Baseball by storm in just five starts — and one All-Star Game appearance.

Perhaps you'd have to go back to 1987 to find something similar, when "Team Streak" captivated the city? Or 2018, when a white-hot Milwaukee Brewers team closed the season on a winning streak and surged into the playoffs? Those two runs had something in common with what the Brewers are experiencing right now.

In his first post-All-Star Game start, Misiorowski and the Brewers will face the Seattle Mariners at 8:40 p.m. CT, looking for a 12th consecutive victory. With that win, the Brewers would trigger a famous local promotion that promises free burgers to Milwaukeeans.

Here are all the details:

What has Jacob Misiorowski done so far this season?

Misiorowski's arrival has been a revelation, with fastballs into the triple digits and wins in four of his five starts.

He threw five no-hit innings in his debut against St. Louis before leaving early with a rolled ankle and cramping in his calves. He then started his next start in Minnesota with six perfect innings before yielding a walk and homer.

In his third start, he outdueled Pirates phenom Paul Skenes in a midweek day-game sellout, a crowd that surpassed even Opening Day. He allowed two hits with eight strikeouts over five scoreless innings.

Then came the July 2 start at the New York Mets, when he didn't make it through the fourth and allowed two homers, including a grand slam. But he rebounded July 8 against Los Angeles, allowing one run on four hits with 12 strikeouts and one walk in six innings, part of a 3-1 win that served as the second game in this 11-game winning streak.

He hasn't officially pitched since then, but he also became a stunning late addition to the National League All-Star team after those five starts, shattering the old mark (11) for fewest big-league appearances before an all-star nod. Misiorowski worked the eighth inning of the Midsummer Classic, allowing loud contact and one hit but no runs.

The All-Star break enables the Brewers to give Misiorowski an extended rest between starts, and they'll probably be searching for ways to limit his workload to keep him fresh for the postseason.

How many innings has Jacob Misiorowski thrown this year?

He's thrown 25⅔ big-league innings and another 63⅓ in the minors for a grand total of 89 innings. He threw 97⅓ last year, so he's already flirting with a career high with two months to play.

After the Brewers' 12th straight victory in April, 1987, George Webb hamburger fans waited for coupons outside the George Webb Restaurant at 6900 N. 76th St. in Milwaukee.

What is the George Webb burger promotion?

The George Webb restaurant chain was founded in 1948 and has 20 locations around Milwaukee. Though the origin details are a little fuzzy, the "prediction" that the Brewers will win 12 straight games dates to the 1940s, but it really became a thing in 1970 when the Brewers brought big-league baseball back to Milwaukee.

It evolved into a promise: If the Brewers win 12 straight, everyone gets free burgers. But the Brewers have only triggered the promotion twice, both at book-ends to the season. Milwaukee famously opened the 1987 season with 13 straight wins and closed the 2018 season with eight wins, followed by four more in the playoffs for 12.

When were the other times the Brewers had a chance to clinch 12 straight wins?

1987: Rob Deer homered in the ninth to tie the game, and Dale Sveum won it in extras on Easter Sunday, one of the most memorable wins in Brewers history. The record-setting Brewers won the next night in Chicago, too, to win a 13th straight to start a wild season that also featured the organization's only solo no-hitter, a 12-game losing streak, Paul Molitor's 39-game hitting streak, Teddy Higuera's 32-inning scoreless streak and more.

2018: In Game 1 of the National League Championship Series at home against the Dodgers, pitcher Brandon Woodruff (the winning pitcher in Game 11 of this year's streak) homered off Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, though the Brewers had to hold on for dear life with the tying run stranded at third in the ninth of a 6-5 win. The Brewers were three wins away from a World Series and had clinched free burgers.

The Brewers didn't win the series, falling in seven games and just missing their second-ever World Series appearance. But the run was unforgettable, with seven regularly-scheduled wins to close the season, a "Game 163" win over the Cubs to win the division on tiebreaker and a three-game sweep in the NL Division Series over the Rockies.

2021: Milwaukee fell to Pittsburgh, 2-0, with the burgers on the line. The Brewers had scored five or more runs in nine of the 11 games and got to double digits four times. But the bats suddenly went quiet against Pirates starter Tyler Anderson, who allowed just three hits and two walks in seven shutout innings. David Bednar and Richard Rodriguez followed, keeping the Brewers from mounting a threat and making a hard-luck loser of Freddy Peralta.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert pitches in the first inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, July 13, 2025.

Which pitcher will the Mariners be sending to oppose the Brewers on July 22?

Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert is a tough customer, with a 3.39 ERA this year in 12 starts and an impressive 1.05 WHIP. The 2024 All-Star had the best WHIP in baseball last year for a qualified starter (0.887) and got Cy Young votes.

There's a catch, though; Gilbert hasn't made it through the sixth since his first start of the year in March, and he's allowed four runs or more in three of his last five starts. He didn't allow any earned runs last time out but two unearned runs on six hits in 5⅓ innings against Detroit on July 13. He's seen a big uptick in strikeouts this year, punching out 13 per nine innings (after 9.5 last year).

The Mariners' best hitter is catcher Cal Raleigh

Cal Raleigh, the dynamite catcher with a league-leading 38 homers, is coming off a win in the All-Star Home Run Derby. He's got a stellar .983 OPS this year, with 83 RBIs and a .370 on-base percentage.

But he also hasn't had an extra-base hit in his last six games since going deep twice in Detroit on July 11. Against the Brewers on July 21, he went 1-for-4 with a single. He's been quiet in July overall, with a .690 OPS.

Players (and fans) rush the field at County Stadium after Pete Ladd recorded the final out of the 1982 American League Championship Series on Oct. 11, 1982, sending the Brewers to their first World Series.

When was the last time the Brewers had the best record in baseball this late in the season?

The Brewers defeated the Mariners on July 21, 6-0, for an 11th consecutive victory. That gave them a record of 60-40 and, coupled with losses by the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Cubs, vaulted the Brewers to the best record in all of baseball.

You'd have to go back to 1982, when the Brewers had the best record at season's end, to find a Brewers team this late in the season owning that distinction.

What is the longest winning streak in Brewers history?

The 13-game winning streak to open 1987 remains a team record, so if Milwaukee wins both of the final two games in the Seattle series, it will have matched that mark as the team heads home for a July 25 game that's already interesting, with the return of several Brewers alumni to commemorate 25 seasons at American Family Field.

The Brewers are on pace to win how many games?

At the current pace, the Brewers would win 97 games, which would eclipse the 2018 and 2011 team for most wins in a season in franchise history.

If the Brewers win, will the burgers be free at George Webb immediately? When can I get my free burgers?

In 2018, George Webb issued fans vouchers for free burgers that could be claimed at a later date; it turned out to be Oct. 18, nearly a full week after the team won its 12th straight — and a couple days before the Brewers were eliminated for the playoffs.

So, don't make plans just yet to run out and get your free grub. We're guessing you'll know more by the time the Brewers are back in town July 25.
