With training camp right around the corner, the Houston Texans defense is projected to be among the NFL's best entering the 2025 season. Leading the unit, is a secondary that might be second to none.
Speaking to ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime recently, fourth-year cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. made his opinions clear on just how good the Texans secondary can be this fall.
"Going based off of last year, plus the guys we got now, we should lead in interceptions probably by at least about 10 to 15," Stingley informed ESPN. "I mean, we know we can get the ball. We just got to keep going to get the ball."
Since moving to a 17-game schedule, the Dallas Cowboys hold the record with 26 interceptions, which the team set in 2021.
Last season, the Texans defense compiled 19 interceptions, second in the league behind the Minnesota Vikings' 24. Stingley Jr. and free safety Calen Bullock paced the way with five picks each, with rookie cornerback Kamari Lassiter adding three.
This season, Houston's secondary could be even stronger with the addition of Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Garder-Johnson. The 27-year old had six interceptions last season, and has registered 13 picks since the start of 2022, fourth-most in the league.
"C.J. is just, he's one piece. He's a foundational piece to what we're doing," Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans said. "But it's going to take a collective effort of building that puzzle, putting the work together and everybody collectively coming together to make that puzzle a beautiful, finished product. We all work together the right way, we can have a really good secondary."
Expected to line up on opposite sides for the second-straight year, Bleacher Report recently ranked Stingley Jr. and Lassiter the best cornerback duo entering the 2025 season. Gardner-Johnson and Bullock will man the safety positions.
The Texans secondary will be on full display next week as training camp opens on Tuesday, July 22nd.
