Michael Vick has nearly done it all in football. He is a College Football Hall of Fame member, a four-time Pro Bowler in the NFL and a former analyst for FOX Sports. Now, he’s crossing another item off the checklist: Coaching.
On Thursday, Vick will make his debut as Norfolk State‘s head football coach. During an appearance on First Take on Thursday morning, Vick revealed the advice Colorado head coach Deion Sanders gave him as he entered the coaching world.
“When you step into a role that you’ve never been into before, it’s the unknown,” Vick said. “You kind of got to reach out to people and say, ‘Hey, how should I do this? What’s the best way to go about putting schedules together?’ Some things that you just don’t know, you got to get advice on.
“But the best piece of advice that I got from Prime was do it your way, put your spin on it, make it what you want it to be. I never dreamt of being a head coach, but I’ve only watched my head coaches and appreciated them and respected them so much that I was able to go back and draw on those experiences like right on the spot.”
Vick has been around no shortage of legendary coaches. From 1998-2000 at Virginia Tech, Vick played under Frank Beamer, who boasts the 11th-most career wins in college football history.
In the NFL, Vick spent time under Andy Reid, who went onto win three Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, Vick spent one year under Mike Tomlin on the Pittsburgh Steelers. At one point, Tomlin was the youngest head coach to ever win a Super Bowl.
While Vick never played for Deion Sanders, the Colorado headman certainly is an excellent resource for advice. After a difficult first year leading the Buffaloes, Sanders led Colorado to a 9-4 record last season and nearly reached the Big 12 Championship game.
Like Sanders did in 2023, Michael Vick has a tall task ahead of him. Norfolk State hasn’t had a winning season since 2021, and has only recorded two winning season in program history. Vick knows he won’t able to turn the program around in a single day, but he’s determined to eventually succeed.
“It’s a day-to-day process,” Vick said. “I learn something new every day, but I also appreciate the process, and that’s what we tell our guys, our young men. Respect the process, appreciate it and enjoy it.”
