Since arriving in Pittsburgh last year, Eli Holstein has made a huge positive impact both on and off the field and that continued today.

On Thursday, the sophomore quarterback announced his plans to launch a new philanthropic initiative that will raise money for JJ and Eli’s Fight Fund at UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation. The money raised will go directly to assist pediatric transplant patients and their families, assisting them with their medical expenses.

The JJ and Eli’s Fight Fund got a nice jump start as Holstein personally donated $10,000, which was immediately matched by Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi.

This fund was started for a young girl named Julia – also known as “JJ” – a transplant patient at UPMC Children’s Hospital. She will serve as Pitt’s Junior Captain for Saturday’s game and join Pitt on the field during pregame.

“The first time I met JJ was during our Day of Service last spring,” said Holstein. “She was full of life, even in the ICU. I went in hoping to lift her spirits, but she ended up lifting mine. Her strength and courage changed me forever.”

Since that day, the two have created a tight bond in which Holstein has come to be with her during procedures along with just coming to play video games. When JJ lost her hair due to treatment, Holstein wanted to make her feel ok and went on to shave his own head.

“That small gesture turned into something bigger,” said Holstein. “I realized I wanted to do more – not just for her, but for every child like her. This fund is about showing up for those who are fighting battles most of us can’t imagine.”

“The biggest plays don’t always happen on the field. Sometimes they happen in quiet moments, when you choose to stand beside someone no matter how tough the battle. That’s what JJ taught me. This fund is my way of standing beside her, and every child still fighting.”

JJ and Eli’s Fight Fund will provide direct support to families of pediatric transplant patients, easing the emotional and financial strain during the most challenging times. Donations will help with needs such as temporary housing, travel expenses, and support programs that offer comfort and care during long hospitalizations.
