San Francisco had just cut two QBs.
49ers sign former Jets QB to fill gap after roster cuts originally appeared on The Sporting News
The San Francisco 49ers cut two quarterbacks earlier this week.
That created a need at the back of the QB depth chart, and they filled it on Wednesday.
The 49ers have signed quarterback Adrian Martinez, formerly of the New York Jets. David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard shared the news on X.
Martinez was a college standout at Nebraska and then Kansas State.
He was a member of the 2023 draft class, and after going undrafted, he spent that summer with the Detroit Lions.

The Jets picked Martinez up in summer 2024, and he spent the season bouncing between the active roster and the practice squad.
Martinez continued with the Jets through this summer and into the preseason, but New York cut him loose.
The Jets chose to keep Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook (practice squad) over Martinez.
Martinez will fill the 49ers' QB3 role as a member of their practice squad.

Brock Purdy is the unquestioned starter with the big new contract.
The 49ers also have a new backup after signing Mac Jones this offseason. Jones, the former first-round pick of the Patriots, was someone Kyle Shanahan liked in his draft class and now he finally got him in the building.
The 'Niners cut both Carter Bradley and Tanner Mordecai ahead of the NFL's Tuesday roster deadline to reduce to 53 players.
After seeing all the cuts around the league, they chose Martinez as the quarterback they wanted to bring in to replace those players.
