With a little over a week until the 2025 NFL season kicks off, the Dallas Cowboys still haven’t resolved the Micah Parsons contract standoff — or his trade request. Teams across the league are watching closely, and one of the most intriguing potential suitors is the Green Bay Packers.
Matt Schneidman, who covers the Packers for The Athletic, joined The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday to share insight into the situation and Green Bay might fit into it all. Evidently, Jerry Jones might not be so willing to ship his star player to another franchise.
“Yeah, I think right now, to my knowledge, Jerry’s not even listening to trade offers,” Schneidman stated. “So I’m not sure an actual trade offer can even be made unless he picks up the phone. The Packers may have an outline of what they would offer, but if Jerry Jones isn’t entertaining legitimate trade talks, then technically there’s nothing on the table. It’s semantics.
But if he does entertain it, from what I’ve heard, the Packers will be interested and they’ll be in the mix. Which, look — that’s information, but it’s not really a surprise. If you think back to 2018 — the Packers aren’t normally in the mix on these big-name trades. You don’t often see them making moves around the trade deadline. But remember, the Packers actually finished second to the Bears for Khalil Mack in 2018, and they were barely outbid.
“Brian Gutekunst, a couple times in his career — Mack being the biggest instance — has been willing to offer a first-round pick for a veteran player. In some cases, it just hasn’t panned out because other teams outbid them. So this feels kind of eerily similar: it’s right before the season, like the Mack trade was, and it’s for an edge rusher in his prime. A move like that could really take the Packers to the next level.”
Alas, Schneidman cautioned that while Packers fans should temper their expectations, the door isn’t fully shut. If a deal does happen, he believes the price will be steep — but possibly worth it for a player of Parsons’ caliber.
“What would it take if this became reality? It would be multiple first-round picks at least,” Schneidman added. “And maybe a player — possibly a wide receiver.
“I don’t think they’d have to give up an edge rusher, but it could be someone like Romeo Doubs or Dontayvion Wicks, plus a couple of first-round picks and maybe some additional draft capital later.”
