The North Carolina high school football season continues with another slate of exciting games during the weekend. The lights of these football stadiums will shine bright as teams from the Tarheel State compete. Of the several games scheduled in the coming days, here are the five that we are most excited about:

No. 3 Mallard Creek at No. 13 Warwick (Va.)

When: Saturday, Aug. 30, 12 p.m.
Where: John B. Todd Stadium, Newport News, Va.

The Mavericks are off to a good start, defeating Rolesville 36-21. They will travel to Virginia and face Warwick, which will play its season opener. The Raiders went 10-3 last season and lost to Maury in the Virginia Class 5 regional semifinals. Despite going on the road, Massey predicts a convincing victory for Mallard Creek to remain undefeated in the North Carolina high school football season.

Massey prediction: Mallard Creek 38, Warwick 6

No. 5 Providence Day School at No. 8 Rolesville

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 7 p.m. ET
Where: Rolesville Stadium, Rolesville, N.C.

The Rams are still seeking their first win in the North Carolina high school football season after losing to Mallard Creek. They will host Providence Day, a team that sneaked past Pennsylvania’s Roman Catholic with a one-point victory last week. This pairing has the makings of being a tight contest that could go either way.

Massey prediction: Rolesville 35, Providence Day School 28

No. 1 Maury (Va.) at No. 6 Cardinal Gibbons

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 7 p.m. ET
Where: William Chappell Stadium, Norfolk, Va.

The Crusaders had a convincing 34-6 victory over Dudley in their North Carolina high school football season opener. After going on the road last week, Cardinal Gibbons will play its home opener against Maury, Virginia’s top-ranked team. This clash should be a tough challenge for the Crusaders because the Commodores haven’t lost a game since December 2022 and are on a 31-game winning streak.

Massey prediction: Maury 35, Cardinal Gibbons 26

No. 10 West Charlotte at No. 15 Monroe

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 7 p.m. ET
Where: Monroe Football Stadium, Monroe, N.C.

In their North Carolina high school football season opener, West Charlotte suffered a heartbreaking one-point overtime loss to Grimsley. They are seeking to bounce back when they visit Monroe, a team that earned a shutout road victory over Hoke County last week. This could be a tight finish, given the Redhawks’ homefield advantage.

Massey prediction: West Charlotte 36, Monroe 20

No. 20 Charlotte Catholic at No. 17 Charlotte Christian

When: Friday, Aug. 29, 7 p.m. ET
Where: Estep Field, Charlotte, N.C.

By the end of this game, one of these teams will suffer its first defeat in the North Carolina high school football season. Which team will take the loss? That’s tough to predict, given their strong start. Charlotte Catholic had a 37-14 win over South Mecklenburg, while Charlotte Christian defeated Page 30-9. This should be an exciting battle at Charlotte.

Massey prediction: Charlotte Christian 28, Charlotte Catholic 21
