West Virginia Athletics Director Wren Baker isn’t opposed to additional opportunities when it comes to the College Football Playoff but wants it to be equitable.

There have been many different scenarios floated about the potential expansion of the College Football Playoff, with the Big 10 even suggesting a 24 or 28-team event. Baker has been previously in favor of the 5+11 model, which would take the five highest-rated conference champions and 11 at-large teams.

But regardless of the model that is settled on, Baker wants one thing to be consistent.

“I just believe there shouldn’t be an inequitable number of AQ’s based on historical performance. I think that is an unfair way to do it. I think you learn it on the field in real time,” he said.

The reason for that is simple not only does it provide more opportunities for teams, but it also doesn’t reward leagues without merit based on their historical performances. That can change from year to year.

Baker wants to see a system put in place that isn’t going to diminish the student athlete experience especially in a sport like football that is particularly physical, grueling and long in terms of the season.

But he is open to any discussion that makes sense.

“If we go to a larger field with more AQ’s I still think those AQ’s for the power conference leagues should be equitable and if some leagues are better they’re going to get more of those at larges than the others,” he said.
