With exactly a week to go before the summer transfer window shuts, Chelsea are still on the fence about whether or not they should sign a central defender to replace the injured Levi Colwill.

The English defender suffered an ACL injury in pre-season and is expected to be out for a large part of the ongoing campaign.

While manager Enzo Maresca has been vocal about the need for a new central defender, the Chelsea management believes that they can find a solution from within their existing defensive options.

While Chelsea have the likes of Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo to call upon, Maresca would like to add to his defensive options even further.

Additionally, if Chelsea don’t sign a centre-back, their new signing Jorrel Hato might have to slot in at centre back for the majority of the campaign.

But if Chelsea are going to fulfil Maresca’s demand, an exceptional defender has just made himself available on the market.

Piero Hincapie has decided to leave Bayer Leverkusen immediately

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Hincapie has decided that he wants to leave Bayer Leverkusen immediately.

Interestingly, last week, it was reported that Chelsea were thinking about making an offer for Hincapie.

If Chelsea play their cards right, the Ecuadorian international has a release clause of just £51.9m ($70m), making him an attainable target for the Blues.

Hincapie started Bayer Leverkusen’s last home game at the weekend and was seen in tears at the end of the game, in what could be seen as a tearful farewell to the home fans.

There is no guarantee that Chelsea will even make a bid for the former Talleres man. However, for £52m, it would be a surprise if a defender of Hincapie’s quality did not get a transfer now that he has asked to leave.
