Best performance

One player stood above the rest in Week 1 and he had a head start on the competition suiting up on Thursday night. Colonel Crawford's Parker Weithman had four catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns of 42, 43, and 73 yards along with an interception on defense. It's a phenomenal start to the season for the talented junior whose goal is to be the top wideout around.

Other notable performances:

  • Bucyrus freshman Isaac Makeever wowed in his debut performance completing 83% of his passes (24-of-29) for 198 yards and two touchdowns, along with rushing in two more to account for all of the points for the Redmen in a narrow loss.
  • Buckeye Central senior Jack Phillips seemingly did it all rushing for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also completing 6-of-13 for 72 yards and a touchdown; sophomore Austin Bogner logged 22 carries for 112 yards in a big win on the road.
  • Crestline's Kody Lawhorn was 13-of-19 for 173 yards and a touchdown in the Bulldogs' season opening loss.

Surprises

The biggest surprise was how comfortable Buckeye Central and Galion won their season openers. The Bucks were on the road to a Crestline team coming off a terrific season with high expectations and came home with a 15-point win in a penalty-riddled game. Galion hosted a St. Marys Memorial team that looked great in the preseason and is always a perennial contender in the WBL and the Tigers capped off the night with a statement win.
