Taking on the fans is never a good idea, especially not when you lose 15 of 17 at home.
Giants All-Star Heliot Ramos Rips Fans Amid Dreadful August originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
San Francisco Giants fans have proved their loyalty and stubbornness in recent weeks, regularly filling Oracle Park to watch Heliot Ramos and the Giants lose 15 of their last 17 home games.
Evidently, that’s not good enough for Ramos, who ripped Giants fans during an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. When asked about Giants manager Bob Melvin amid continued criticism, Ramos said that “outside people don’t know anything.”
Rather than leave it there or direct his frustration at critics in general, Ramos did the one thing players should never do: take on the fans.
“When we were winning, everybody was on our side, now it’s like all the fans are against us and all that,” Ramos said. “I don’t get it.
“We’re here and we know what’s going on,” Ramos continued, “we know what we’re feeling, we know what we’re working for, but fans are going to be fans, we can’t do nothing about it.”
Heliot Ramos Made the Wrong Call Bashing Giants Fans
Criticizing a fanbase, especially amid an 8-19 second half, is always the wrong call. It’s not the fans’ fault that opponents have outscored the Giants 186-154 since July 1, nor is it on the Oracle Park crowd that the Giants have dropped to 30-33 at home.
In fact, Ramos has played a pivotal role in the Giants’ struggles. He’s been terrible in the outfield — his -7 Rdrs (Defensive Runs Saved Above Average) is fourth-worst among qualifying left fielders — and Ramos’ .741 OPS, while still above league-average, is well down from last year’s .792.
Don’t let Ramos’ .275 second-half average fool you, either, because he’s homerless with a .650 OPS in those 27 games.
Yet, the Giants have drawn nearly 2.3 million fans this year, ranking seventh in baseball as of Aug. 18. Over 35,000 people attended last Wednesday’s 11-1 loss to the San Diego Padres, and history shows that Giants fans will keep coming, even if Ramos apparently has no time for them.
