Heading into training camp, the expectation was Russell Wilson would be the New York Giants’ starting quarterback after signing with the franchise this offseason. But Jaxson Dart put together a strong training camp, and ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum argued he should get the starting nod.

Tannenbaum, a former general manager with the New York Jets, drew comparisons to 2009 when Mark Sanchez arrived. A former No. 1 overall pick, he started Week 1 as the Jets made a run to the AFC Championship that year.

Based on what he’s seen through camp and preseason, Tannenbaum thinks Dart could put the Giants in a better position to succeed long-term than Wilson would. That’s why he said Brian Daboll should start the former Ole Miss star.

“Jaxson Dart is a better player and he’s a better athlete than Russell Wilson,” Tannenbaum said Tuesday on NFL Live. “Look, I understand there’s going to be growing pains, but he is somebody that’s energized this franchise. He understands what to do. And when you talk to the Giants organization, they’re actually more thrilled with what he’s doing off the field than on the field.

“Russell Wilson, to me, is an athletically diminished player. He was sacked at a rate 31% above the league average. So is it going to be perfect from Day 1? Absolutely not. He will make mistakes. But a young, ascending Jaxson Dart is what the New York Giant franchise needs because that’ll make them better in November and December. Russell Wilson, who’s had a good career, is clearly closer to the end.”

Jaxson Dart’s depth chart position for final preseason game

The Giants traded up to select Dart in this year’s NFL Draft after a standout career at Ole Miss, where he became the program’s all-time leading passer. In two preseason games, he has completed 26 of 35 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns. He also has 29 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Ahead of the third and final preseason game this week, the Giants’ depth chart looks as expected, though. Russell Wilson is QB1, followed by Jameis Winston – who also signed with New York this offseason – as QB2. Jaxson Dart then sits at QB3 and Tommy DeVito is the fourth quarterback on the roster.

The Giants will close out preseason action this week against the New England Patriots. Kickoff is set for Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.
