South Carolina women's basketball legend A'ja Wilson has once again made WNBA history, setting a few league firsts on Tuesday night.
South Carolina women’s basketball alum A’ja Wilson remains the best player in the world. Despite missing some time earlier this season, she has crept back into the MVP race, as well.
On Tuesday night, Wilson made WNBA history in more ways than one in a hard-fought win over fellow former Gamecocks Allisha Gray and Te-Hina Paopao and the Atlanta Dream.
Scoring 32 points (her third consecutive 30-point outing), she moved into second place on the all-time list for 30-point games. Wilson now only trails Diana Taurasi, the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer, in the cateogory. She also became the youngest player and the fastest (in terms of games played) to reach 5500 career points.
The reigning WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week finished the contest with 32 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks, and four assists.
She broke a tie with Candance Parker and Brittney Griner and now stands along atop the WNBA’s all-time rankings for games with at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. Ironically, Tuesday’s win came in a matchup against Griner.
Wilson has led her Las Vegas Aces squad to eight victories in a row. The team now sits in the No. 5 spot in the WNBA standings.
On the season, the former South Carolina women’s basketball star is averaging 22.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.2 blocks, and 1.6 steals per game. Despite being the focal point of every opposing defense, she is shooting just under 50% from the field. She’s making over 85% of her shots from free throw line.
If she fights her way to another MVP honor, it will be her fourth. No player has ever won four or more WNBA MVPs. Wilson is currently tied for the most all-time awards with Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie, and Sheryl Swoopes.
