Ski Ward's new off-season terrain park is open Monday through Friday.
A new way to beat the summer heat has debuted near Boston at Ski Ward, Massachusetts. On Monday, August 18, 2025, the small ski area opened a summer terrain park with artificial snow that has a selection of freestyle features.

The modest setup looks like a great way to hone your rail skiing skills while pretending, if only for a few hours, that it isn’t August. Ski Ward’s terrain park is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The ski area also offers inner tubing, volleyball, and kids' parties during the summer.
With its summer terrain park, Ski Ward is furthering its commitment to skiing regardless of the weather. In 2023, the ski area made headlines when it unexpectedly became the first mountain open in North America for skiing and snowboarding despite the less-than-conducive conditions in Massachusetts.
How? The ski area relied on a Latitude 90, a powerful snowmaking system that works even when temperatures reach as high as 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

This time of year is the doldrums for would-be summer skiers. Minimal high alpine snow remains in the backcountry, and Timberline Lodge, Oregon—the most reliable summer ski resort—is now closed until winter begins.
But there are a few places like Ski Ward keeping skiing alive throughout North America. The most prominent is Big Snow American Dream, a large, indoor ski area outside Manhattan, New York, that stays open year-round.
Across the pond in Europe, other hills use artificial snow for summer skiing. CopenHill, in Copenhagen, Denmark, has the unique trait of being a ski area on top of a power plant. In Stockholm, Sweden, there’s Hammarbybacken.
Barring these options, you could always head to Peru and visit Toro Mata, the world’s largest sand dune. One skier, Jordane Legal, recently posted a video of himself skiing there, no snow required.
No one would fault you for soaking up the last stretch of summer without obsessing over skiing, though. Before long, winter will arrive, and we’ll have to trade board shorts for snow pants. Don’t feel bad if you’d rather play some volleyball in the meantime.
