Dave Clawson not betting against Jeff Brohm, Louisville in ACC picture in 2025

Many have dialed in on Clemson as the heavy favorite to win the ACC. But who might challenge the Tigers is a matter for debate still. Could it be Louisville?

One man who is more intimately familiar with the ACC than most, former Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson, believes this might be a year that Louisville can contend. He recently joined the College GameDay Podcast and provided his thoughts on the program, starting at quarterback.

“I think their path is to get to the ACC title game like they did two years ago,” Brohm said. “I’d never bet against Jeff Brohm with a talented quarterback. I think he’s going to be exactly what Miller (Moss) needs to get his career on track.”

Moss has spent the last four years at USC, but he transferred to Louisville this offseason after his most productive year yet. In 2024 he threw for 2,555 yards and 18 touchdowns, albeit against nine interceptions.

He’ll be working with what Clawson sees as one of the sneakiest advantages in the ACC. Playing in front of the Cards fans.

“That is one of the toughest places to play in the ACC,” Clawson said. “That home field advantage up there is very underrated in our league. So yeah, I do think they’re a threat. But to me the ACC title game is going to be Clemson and who, and I would put them maybe right below Miami and SMU as a team that could get there.”

ESPN insider Dan Wetzel then weighed in on the conversation, once again turning back to Brohm when discussing Louisville. It’s clear he has a lot of belief in the head man.

“I think really interesting season,” Wetzel said. “Jeff Brohm is great at building programs. This is Year 3, and I think Dave would probably agree, that’s kind of when you can really impose your culture on a program. But this is a different era to do that.”

It’s a different era because the transfer portal and NIL have changed how rosters are built. There are a lot more potential unknowns with how transfers might fit.

And Louisville has a lot of transfers. A lot.

“Thirty transfers coming in, so I think a lot of this is going to be scouting, not just in talent but in fit,” Wetzel said. “But if the Cards start playing like a Jeff Brohm program we expect out of it, absolute contender. They get Clemson visiting Louisville late in the season. I think that could be a very critical game in this deal.

“I don’t know how to evaluate thirty transfers. I’m not going to tell you I’ve been watching all the tape. And maybe even the coaches don’t. But I trust Jeff Brohm did, so I think they have a very good running attack. There’s a lot there. They’re contenders. They’re second-tier contenders, but it’s a dangerous team that could really make some noise.”

One thing that might throw a wrench in Louisville’s plans? Clawson pointed it out at the end of the segment on the podcast.

“They’re the only team I think that has Miami, Clemson and SMU on the schedule,” he said. “So their path might be the hardest one to get to Charlotte.”
