Through two preseason games, the Dallas Cowboys have yet to see rookie running back Jaydon Blue. A knee injury has kept him on the sidelines, even during practice. Dallas took Blue this past April with the hopes of finding a potential starting player.

Blue appears to be on his way to getting out there for the Friday night preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons. He is in full pads on Tuesday, participating in practice. A positive sign for the Cowboys just a few weeks away from the regular season opener.

“Good sign for Cowboys rookie RB Jaydon Blue (knee),” The Athletic‘s Jon Machota said via X. “He’s in full pads and participating in today’s practice. He has missed the first two preseason games. Good chance that he plays Friday.”

The injury to Blue came when the team was still in Oxnard. A hard hit knocked him out of practice before resulting in a trip to the medical tent. Since then, we have not seen much of the rookie.

Dallas took Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, hoping to address its running back situation. Blue played his college ball inside the Lone Star State, suiting up for the Texas Longhorns. Plenty of guys at the position have come out of Austin and found quick success at the next level. Blue is hoping to be the next one.

More on Jaydon Blue, Cowboys running back situation

Running back was a position the Cowboys needed to desperately figure out this offseason. Rico Dowdle, the team’s leading rusher, was no longer on the roster. Behind Dowdle, Dallas did not have much else. A nice mix of veteran presence and youngsters was needed.

Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders provide the former, while Blue was a part of the draft class alongside Clemson‘s Phil Mafah. A combination of those four figures to be on the opening night roster when it’s trimmed down to 53 players. Exactly how head coach Brian Schottenheimer splits up the carries is not yet known.

Everyone is hoping Blue can be healthy by Sept. 4 when the team travels up to Philadelphia to face bitter NFC East rival, the Eagles. Getting some experience in the preseason would certainly help, making sure his first-ever action is against the reigning Super Bowl champions. A critical stretch is ahead of Blue, looking to make sure the knee is completely healthy.
