Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons four-star 2027 receiver Demarcus DeRoche has committed to Miami over schools including Auburn, NC State, Florida State, Florida and Louisville, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound prospect and No. 132 overall recruit announced Tuesday evening.
DeRoche becomes Miami’s fifth total commit in a 2027 cycle already shaping up as one of the country’s best and joins top-300 safety Jaylyn Jones, top-100 receiver Ah’Mari Stevens, top-15 cornerback Kent Dopson and unranked offensive tackle Zaquan Linton in next year’s cycle (although Dopson is expected to reclassify to the 2026 cycle in the near future). DeRoche is listed as a receiver by Rivals but is widely viewed as a hyper-versatile athlete and is being recruited for different roles with different programs.
Tight ends coach Cody Woodiel served as his primary recruiter, although recruiting relations coordinator Frank Tucker was heavily involved and played a massive role in landing DeRoche’s commitment.
“Miami is the right place because it really has everything you really need,” DeRoche told CaneSport. “It’s tight end university. It has defense. The coaching staff has everything you could really want for a coaching staff. On defense, I play defensive end, and Jason Taylor was a Hall-of-Famer and is coaching at Miami.”
DeRoche was always high on the Hurricanes.
“It’s home,” DeRoche said. “I always told myself Miami will be the place I want to and will go to. I don’t like leaving Florida. I don’t like the cold. Florida’s weather, the environment, Florida is the home of football, and Miami is the biggest school in Florida for football.”
DeRoche attended Miami’s home game against Florida State last fall and worked out at tight end and defensive end at a Hurricanes’ prospect camp June 18. He’s expected to play both sides at Cardinal Gibbons this fall after transferring from Boyd Anderson this offseason. He accounted for 350 yards, five touchdowns and seven sacks last year. He also averaged nearly 8.5 points, six rebounds and one block per game last year as a basketball player.
He said Miami’s staff hasn’t told him specifically where they envision him playing but was enthused to add him.
“They really still don’t know what they want me as either, but when I get there we’ll all figure it out together,” DeRoche said. “I might be playing both ways.”
He’s more than ready to be a Hurricane.
“It feels amazing,” DeRoche said. “I’m ready to get to work.”
